22nd November

Regardless of their efforts, the candidates’ work is wasted if the electorate show no interest. undefinedStanding for parliament is perhaps the greatest form of public service a citizen can perform, and yet it has become either ridiculed or a matter for bored disinterest among so many. We will be praying about this today.

US President John F Kennedy was assassinated on this day in 1963 in Texas. A timely reminder that those who stand for office need our prayer for protection.

  • There is genuine choose between party policies this election, so pray that this stimulates discussion and interest between people you know and causes a higher turn-out on December 12th than has been the case in recent elections
  • Pray that members of the public will encourage candidates when they meet them, and thank them for standing even if they are not intending to vote for them
  • There are ‘headline issues’ that the parties are pushing, but these might not be where the public are scratching. Pray that the things people are interested in get debated at hustings both locally and on media debates – this coming Sunday is often jocularly referred to as “STIR UP SUNDAY” so we will use one of the collect prayers for that day to pray that people are motivated to vote and also to seek God: Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people, that they bringing forth the fruit of good works, may by you be richly rewarded: through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

Bible Reading: Philippians 2:1-11 Today’s prayer from http://www.engage19.org.uk is We pray for hustings events to be well attended and that candidates will be impacted by the views of local Christians. Amen.
